How WCK Supports Communities on the Frontlines of Climate & Natural Disasters For a lot of people, the climate crisis isn't an abstract concern. It shows up as a hurricane that arrives before a community has recovered from the last, or floodwater that cuts off a neighborhood from the nearest grocery store for days. When that happens, hunger follows fast. Roads wash out. Power goes down. Supply chains break. And families are left trying to figure out how to eat. The scale of what we're seeing has shifted. Nine of the ten years with the most billion-dollar disasters on record have happened in the past decade. Floods, wildfires, and extreme weather events aren't isolated incidents anymore—they overlap, intensify, and arrive faster than communities can prepare. Traditional disaster funding often can't keep up. Resources take days or weeks to get allocated and deployed, and families can't wait that long. WCK's Climate and Natural Disaster Fund is built around a different approach. For forecasted events like hurricanes, we pre-position teams before landfall. For sudden disasters, we're already moving before the storms are over. We don't build an operation from scratch when we arrive—we partner with local restaurants, food trucks, and community members who already know the area and the people in it. That's exactly what happened when the Kona Low storms flooded Oʻahu's North Shore in early 2026. Jeramiah Quenga didn't wait for help—he opened his restaurant kitchen and started cooking, and kept going for more than ten days before WCK ever connected with his team. When we did, we didn't take over. We helped him scale what he'd already built. When we can, we source ingredients locally and hire from the community. We use whatever transport is available to reach families in hard-to-access areas. The food is fresh, familiar, and made by people who actually belong to the place they're serving. Over the past year alone, WCK teams have responded to flooding in Brazil and Hawaiʻi, an earthquake in Indonesia, a blizzard across the northeastern US, and a cyclone in Madagascar. The disasters ahead will be more frequent and more complex. We're already preparing for them by expanding teams, pre-positioning supplies, and building the regional partnerships that let us move quickly across multiple geographies at once.
