Dear friends,
2021 was the year when the abnormal became normal — when the pandemic and extreme weather became just another week, and just another month.
John Steinbeck wrote about being there “wherever there’s a fight so that hungry people may eat.” This year, we have been fighting on many fronts, in many places.
We were with Kentucky families after the devastating tornadoes, under a bridge with thousands of asylum seekers in Texas, and in La Palma during the volcanic eruptions that transformed the landscape of the Spanish island.
We put boots on the ground in Texas when its power grid collapsed in a winter freeze, in Germany after once-in-a-century floods displaced tens of thousands, and in Louisiana after Hurricane Ida’s category 4 landfall.
And we continued to serve millions suffering from the pandemic across the United States and around the world — including in India during its second wave of Covid.
This is vital work. But it’s not enough. That’s why we launched our Climate Disaster Fund this year: our $1 billion commitment over the next decade to support communities impacted by the climate crisis.
As the new year begins, we want to thank you for standing with us in this fight. Your support is the reason we can provide so many meals, so quickly.
But you should know that your support does more than feed hungry families.
A plate of food is never just a meal. It’s a plate of hope. It tells people in their darkest hour that somebody, somewhere cares.
That somebody is you.
So from all of us at World Central Kitchen — the cooks, the volunteers, the drivers and the whole team — thank you. |
