WCK activates in Ukraine & surrounding countries

WCK activates to support Ukrainian families in need

Responding to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the World Central Kitchen Relief Team is now on the ground in Poland and Romania beginning to serve hot, nourishing meals to the tens of thousands of refugees that are streaming across the Ukraine border each day. We are also working with restaurants inside Ukraine to serve residents remaining in the country.

The UN estimates over 368,000 Ukrainians have fled since the attack began, with that number expected to rise dramatically. The journey into Poland is daunting, with many Ukrainian families traveling for days without food.

SUPPORT WCK RELIEF EFFORTS

We have teams setup at multiple border crossings into Poland, including Medyk, the main pedestrian crossing. It is very cold, and families arrive at all hours of the night, so we’re working to ensure they have a hot plate of food as they seek safety.

After crossing into Poland, buses transport many refugees to nearby accommodation centers. Last night, we set up at one of these centers in Korczowa with our food truck partner Oh My Ramen. Sasha and Vitalik from Oh My Ramen are both Ukrainians living in Poland, and they drove 4 hours to join the WCK team and will continue to serve in the days ahead.
Shatabdi traveled with her cat Crimsee into Poland, walking for 60 kilometers before waiting in a 12-hour line to cross the border, all with no food or water. She found a wheelchair to sit in and ate her first meal from WCK since taking the journey.

In addition to our work in Poland, we are supporting local restaurants preparing meals in Odessa and Lviv, two cities in Ukraine. WCK teams are also on the ground in Romania and arriving soon to Moldova, Slovakia, and Hungary.

This situation is evolving fast, and WCK is scaling up quickly to best support Ukrainian families under attack. Through this incredibly challenging time, we’ll help in the best way we know how, with a freshly prepared plate of food.
