A heatwave in Chile is putting new regions at risk as hundreds of fires first ignited in the south over a week ago. The blazes are one of the country’s worst natural disasters in years and have left extensive damage in the regions of Biobío, Ñuble, and Araucanía—over a thousand people are displaced, at least 740,000 acres have burned, and 24 people have lost their lives. This has been a challenge for the thousands of emergency crews who are working against hot temperatures, dry weather, and powerful winds. |
