Hope in Action: WCK's Update in Gaza this Ramadan

 

The escalating conflict in the Middle East has added more uncertainty to daily life this Ramadan. World Central Kitchen is steadfastly supporting families in Gaza despite immense challenges while responding to growing displacement in Lebanon. For families in Gaza, uncertainty has been a daily reality long before the current conflict. That's why our teams work tirelessly to ensure hot meals, food kits, bread, and water reach families during this sacred month. For families navigating so much unpredictability, that consistency matters - and Faiza Abdeen's story shows why. Our team recently met Faiza, who was displaced from Rafah to Mawasi in Khan Younis. She is one of hundreds of thousands of people uprooted by the ongoing violence, trying to hold onto something that resembles a life. Over time, she told our team, she quietly stopped expecting things: deliveries, stability, the familiar rhythms of suhoor and iftar she once knew. Survival had replaced hope. When our Ramadan food kit arrived, she shared her gratitude: "The kit came as a complete surprise to me…I wasn't expecting it." What you see here is a quiet but powerful moment: Faiza lifting each item from the food kit and realizing that, for the first time in a long while, she did not have to accept whatever was handed to her. She could choose what to cook. "I will prepare pasta today…all the ingredients are in the kit." She could set a table that felt like the one that once gathered her loved ones before everything was taken from them. Stories like Faiza's show why consistent support matters. As conflict in Iran and across the region widens and border access grows increasingly uncertain, WCK remains committed to showing up. Nearly 27,000 Ramadan food kits have already reached families—including close to 2,000 offloaded just yesterday to camps and shelters across Gaza. Tens of thousands more are packaged and ready to move the moment a corridor opens. Our founder José Andrés called the recent deliveries good news, but reminded us of what's still at stake: "We need a constant flow of food and fuel. Every day."
