The Palacio de Velázquez reopens with the exhibition The Wayward Pearl, devoted to artist Fernando Sánchez Castillo (Madrid, 1970), who maintains that “art is a force that makes state narratives tremble”. Starting from this premise, he acts upon the forms through which power represents itself, dismantling its symbols and revealing the fragile narratives that sustain it. In analysing monuments, images, gestures, and legends, he highlights how history is not a stable narrative but a permanently conflictive field which also affects the present.
This exhibition is concerned with the working method of Blanca Sánchez Berciano (Madrid, 1948–2007), indivisible from her being and existence. The show emphasises the creative drive of this curator, cultural manager and collector from the camp and her collage practice as a methodology for building a conceptual reality based on articulating visual and material fragments.
