Response Update: Meals Are Reaching Families in Nepal

 

WCK Responds to Flash Flooding in Nepal On August 26, a glacier collapsed on the Nepal-China border, sending a catastrophic debris flow more than 60 miles down the Trishuli River. Bridges, roads, and whole settlements were swept away, and some communities can now be reached only by helicopter or on foot. WCK mobilized right away, starting in Nuwakot Province, where survivors were being flown to a makeshift airfield in Bidur. Families waited at the gates, hoping to spot a face they knew, and the moment people landed, our team was there with a hot meal. In those first days, we served thousands of meals, including local favorites like samosas and momos. Today, our first community kitchen opened in Gerkhutar, just north of Bidur, where we are cooking breakfast, lunch, and dinner alongside the Chefs Association of Nepal. Getting there was not easy, since seven miles of broken road took our team more than five hours to cross. Thanks to the Nepal Scouts, who knew every turn, all of our equipment arrived safely.
