Critical dam destroyed in southern Ukraine

Villages flooded after Ukrainian dam destroyed

On Tuesday, residents of southern Ukraine woke to water streaming into their homes. The Kakhovka dam—located in the Kherson region along the Dnipro River—had been destroyed. Damage to the structure resulted in torrents of water that flooded dozens of communities along the river. Families were forced to grab whatever belongings they could and traverse flooded roads toward safety.
Arriving ready with sandwiches and bottled water, WCK’s emergency response teams were on the ground serving evacuees within hours of the dam explosion. Our teams quickly established meal distribution sites near flooded communities and hospitals where some evacuees headed. Now, a day later, these teams continue distributing meals, in some cases using inflatable boats to reach people who could not evacuate. This is a quickly evolving situation and we are working with rescue teams to ensure our support reaches families in need.

SUPPORT OUR EFFORTS IN UKRAINE
Once more, the WCK family is mourning the loss of a friend, team member, and courageous Food Fighter. Igor was killed last week when a Russian missile hit his apartment building in Ukraine’s eastern Kharkiv region. Igor, 60, joined the WCK family last year as a volunteer—he spent months working tirelessly to ensure nourishing meals reached neighbors in his hometown, just three miles from fighting on the frontline. His wife, also home at the time of the attack, survived the blast. Please join us in remembering this Food Fighter, a true beacon of light, bravery, and hope in Ukraine.
